A US Air Force employee has been charged with transmitting classified information about Russia’s war with Ukraine on a foreign online dating platform.
David Franklin Slater, 63, who is a retired Army lieutenant colonel assigned to the Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base, was arrested on Saturday.
The 63-year-old has been charged in Nebraska with illegally disclosing national defence information and conspiring to do so.
Prosecutors say Slater attended briefings between February and April 2022 about Russia’s war with Ukraine.
But despite having signed non-disclosure documents, he is alleged to have shared details about military targets and Russian capabilities on an online messaging platform with person who claimed to be a woman living in Ukraine.
According to an indictment, that alleged co-conspirator, who is not identified by prosecutors, repeatedly asked Slater for information and described him as “my secret informant love”.
Slater is due to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.
This is a very disturbing story. I am glad that this individual was caught before they were able to do any real damage. However, I am concerned about the security of our classified information.
This is a very serious matter. It is clear that this individual should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
I am not surprised by this story. The Air Force has a long history of security breaches. It is clear that the Air Force needs to do a better job of protecting its classified information.
This is a very sad story. I feel sorry for this individual. It is clear that they made a mistake. However, I hope that they are able to get the help that they need.
I am not sure what to make of this story. It is clear that this individual should not have had access to this information in the first place. However, I am not sure if this is a case of espionage or just a case of someone making a mistake.

This is a very funny story. I can’t believe that someone would be so stupid as to share classified information on a dating site.
